UnitedHealth Group executive to help drive Center's mission of community-based EHR adoption
RALEIGH, N.C. – July 12, 2007 – The Center for Community Health Leadership, an initiative sponsored by Misys Healthcare Systems, today announced the appointment of Archelle Georgiou, M.D., to its Advisory Board. Dr. Georgiou is executive vice president of strategic relations for UnitedHealth Group’s OptumHealth business. She will play a key role in the Center’s mission to promote adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) in selected local communities where this technology will be installed and piloted.
Dr. Georgiou’s expertise is in empowering individuals to be responsible health care consumers through the use of information and technology. She is frequently invited to speak at health care industry and consumer forums on the topics of personal health records and integrated health care delivery models. Dr. Georgiou works with product and technology development teams in UnitedHealthcare and OptumHealth to meet the evolving needs of payers, clinicians and consumers.
“I am so pleased that Dr. Georgiou accepted our invitation to join the Center Advisory Board, a group of preeminent representatives from various constituencies within the healthcare industry,” said Leigh Burchell, director of the Center for Community Health Leadership. “It was critical to include a leader with experience in the payer community because payers will benefit significantly from widespread use of electronic health records. Dr. Georgiou’s extensive knowledge of payer needs and tools, such as personal health records, adds a valuable perspective to the Center Advisory Board and to the materials we will produce to guide others in EHR adoption and HIE establishment.”
Dr. Georgiou is a specialist in internal medicine who joined UnitedHealth Group after five years in private practice. As chief medical officer for United Healthcare, Dr. Georgiou developed the business and clinical strategy for Care Coordination™, the foundation for UnitedHealthcare’s approach to medical management.
“Electronic health records enable clinicians and hospitals to provide better care based on easy access to a more complete picture of their patient’s health. It is gratifying to work with the Center for Community Health Leadership as they make the concept of electronic health records a reality. In addition to better results for patients, increased use of EHRs will help lower costs for employers and other health care purchasers,” said Dr. Georgiou. “UnitedHealth Group and the Center for Community Health Leadership share the same goals of improving quality, affordability and access to health care.”
